With Lanre Oyebanjo expected for another lengthy spell on the side lines manager Gary Mills has acted fast to snap up 22 year old right back Derwin Martina.

The player will miss tonight’s game against Lincoln as he hasn’t received international clearance. However he has agreed personal terms with York City FC.

For those looking for an insight into the new addition here are five facts:

#1 – Older brother Cuco Martina currently plays for Premier League Southampton

Martina is the youngest of two brothers; Cuco and Javier whom play for Southampton and A.V.V. Zeeburgia respectively. Let’s hope he possess a similar footballing ability to that of his Premier League sibling who also plays at right back.

#2 – He is a product of the Ajax youth academy

Born in Amsterdam he joined the world famous academy of Ajax at the age of 13 and started off as a striker before being transformed into a right back.

During this time he was compared to former Netherlands international and fellow Ajax academy graduate Michael Reiziger.

He did not make the first team at Ajax.

#3 – Was last playing in the 3rd level of Finnish football league.

Making 17 appearances for Ajax’s reserve team in the second tier of Dutch football he was subsequently transferred to league rivals RKC Waalwijk on a free. It was here that Martina received his call up to his national team – also making 16 league appearances in the process.

Due to injury problems at the start of the 2015-16 season his contract was terminated in January 2016 and has up until now been playing in the 3rd level of the Finnish football pyramid with Atlantis FC making 3 appearances.

#4 – Accused of match fixing in back in September

Along with three other teammates at Atlantis FC he was accused of match fixing and was investigated but was later found innocent. It was the club however who were found to have had bets on their fixtures by those involved in match fixing.

#5 – A current international with Curaçao

No, not the blue liqueur, but the actual country. Martina has had 3 call ups to his national
team, all being in 2014. Older brother Cuco is the most capped player and captain of the national team.

The newly formed Curaçao National Team only played their first FIFA match in 2011 and are currently ranked 73rd in the FIFA world rankings.

My Say:

On paper it might look like a good signing but I’m going to wait until I see him play. Yes he is a current international but we all remember Luke Woodland who came to Bootham Crescent just to sit on the bench.

Of course it’s vital we get some kind of replacement for Lanre Oyebanjo and I’m looking forward to Martina challenging Rooney and Heslop for the right back position. That’s if he is able to stay fit because crucially he has had injury problems in the past.

He sounds as if he is an attacking player as he’s done a reverse Gareth Bale and gone from striker to right back so let’s hope he can replicate a 2011/12 Lanre Oyebanjo.
